The Spice Affair - Balanagar

The last Sunday had me venturing into a rather unknown (for me) part of the city - Balanagar. Following the directions by Maps, we travelled a good 15 km to reach this place. The closer we got to the destination, the inkling of the restaurant being more of dhaba setup, increased. But the reality turned out to be different. Sitting unsuspectedly on the first floor of Vinay Capitol (the distinctive red building near Vimal theater), is Spice Affair.

The moment the place first comes into view, the peek inside that you get through the glass doors, you realise how much of a stand out it is, from the rest of area. Seating and ambient is textbook family dine-in kind — sofa chairs, ample lighting and a comforting, familiar kind of menu. A wall of the restaurant is taken up by a huge projector screen, and come the IPL season, it is going to be a boon for the match addicts.

Spice Affair is barely fifty days old, and the owner, Kaushik, had invited us for a review session. Talking to us, he told that the area lacked a place where a family, or say a group of girls, can sit down and have a meal.
(Psst! They may come up with a barbecue-on-table setup, super soon!) On to the food now.

~ Paneer Majestic - Thin paneer fingers coated and fried, and put in a yummy gravy sauce, this is one starter that vegetarians should definitely go for!

~ Paneer Tikka - This was the starter from their Tandoori section. Though the paneer itself was soft and grilled well, it was on the higher side of spice levels. Turns out, that is how the crowd usually prefers it. Let them know your personal taste, and they shall prepare accordingly.

~ Singapore Noodles - They use the thicker version of noodles for the prep of this one. The flavours were subtle and not too high on chilli; I liked it.

~ Kadhai Paneer - Though the flavours were all there, I found it lacking a bit in the number of pieces. Pointed out then as well, but it could have been an issue with only my portion.

~ Garlic Naan - No complaints there, whatsoever!

~ Veg Biryani - We had a mix of Mushroom and Paneer versions, and it was quite good!

~ Gajar Halwa - I usually do not like having this delicacy outside, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one. Balanced amount of khoya and sweetness, loaded with dry fruits, a pleasant note to end the meal on.

~ Ice creams - The regular Butterscotch and Chocolate scoops were our pick.

The process of the items are reasonable and the quantities further justify them. One of its kind in the area, this place could definitely be the joint to have a good food and time, comfortably.

P.S.: I hear they have a killer Keema Biryani, which the non-vegetarians on the table went gaga over.

P.P.S.: The quantities shown in the images are somewhat lesser than what they usually offer.
